My name is Mathilde Garibaldi.
As far as I can remember, I have always looked at the details before the whole picture: in paintings, in buildings, in the trees, even in people. I rarely meet anyone's eyes at first; it takes me a while, but I notice a hand, a collarbone, the way someone moves or crosses their legs. So I chose art and interior design, because they let me keep training that eye.
For years I made patterns and reworked photos, but I never had the courage to go further. In late 2021, I founded GARIBALDI STUDIO.
Shawls are a love language, but also how I protected myself from the world, growing up hypersensitive. They are the softest shell possible, wrapping us in something intimate and elegant. They carry stories and scents, passed down from those we cherish and gifted to those we love.
For me, sensitivity is a strength. When words fall short, I turn to pattern, translating sensations into colour, shape and texture. My designs begin with a photograph, or an MRI of my own head, which I rework until one detail holds a single moment, personal and true. Memento mori runs through the work: life is precious and short, and it is better to try than to regret.
Moving from Marseille to Berlin changed everything. The warmth of the Mediterranean meets Berlin's raw energy. Two very different places, yet both share a vibrancy and a community that can push you to create.
At GARIBALDI STUDIO, my shawls are not made for a season. They are made to last, to be treasured, and to outlast trends.
Created in Berlin, made in Como. A shawl is a quiet statement of individuality and creativity, whether you are dressing up or keeping it simple.
